Top 5 Privacy Focused Alternatives to Gmail

This article is about finding privacy focused alternatives to gmail.

Privacy Focused Alternatives to Gmail

Gmail came on the scene way back in 2004, and changed the game as far as email was concerned. It was a brilliant product.

Now it's a privacy invading parasite that tells google everything about your life, so they can show you more ads, and milk more money from you.

As part of a wider project of reclaiming my attention, I'm compiling a list of alternatives to Google products, starting with the mother of all data mining sites, gmail.

Why bother?

  1. Your inbox is a data mine for google. Nothing more, nothing less. They know all of your online purchasing habits, because they read your receipts. They know if you're having an mental health breakdown, because they read your messages to your therapist. They know literally everything about you, because they read all of your emails. Even if you're on a paid account.
  2. It's yet another place you get bombarded with ads.
  3. The contents of your inbox aren't just shared with google - they're shared with third parties, too. Thousands of them.
  4. When gmail is open in one browser tab, google are collecting what you're doing in the other browser tabs.
  5. Even if you don't use gmail, if you email someone who does, google are building a profile on you.

Breaking Up With Google is Hard

As I'm sure you're thinking now, leaving google is hard. You don't just lose email, you lose your calendar, drive storage, youtube and robust mobile apps, too.

But free has never been free, and we've been paying for it with our attention and privacy for years.

But if you care at all about your personal privacy, it's a step that has to be made. Perhaps then big tech will get the message. With looming anti-trust legislation and growing consumer distrust of big tech and pervasive surveillance in general, we might just see a shift towards paying with money instead of privacy.
