There's plenty of argument about using materials like MDF in fine woodwork, and I know how I feel about it (hint: not great), but stable, flat and consistent MDF really is the best ground for veneer work.
And in one of my favourite anachronisms, because the surface is so smooth you need to give it some 'tooth' for the glue to bond do. And for that I use an ancient toothing plane to create a cross-hatch on the surface.



Takes all of 15 seconds and you're off. The old ways are still valid.
